Surges

Surges are a mechanical currency that can be spent to reduce the CL of challenges or to reduce a hero’s current Strain. When a hero surges, the player should use it as a queue for their narration to describe how they add extra effort, focus or power to their action. Are they digging deep to summon the strength or courage to face the obstacle or perhaps they are drawing on the magical energies in the land around them. 

 

Earning Surges

Heroes typically begin with two Surges and can earn more if they miss the CL on their action rolls. The Facilitator may also award Surges for certain player actions during the game, typically for doing something selfless that moves the story forward. In some cases the Facilitator might award surges between sessions or story arcs. 

 

Using Surges

To use a Surge, a player must say they want to spend one before any dice are rolled. This means that if a hero is facing a challenge and the acting player wants to spend a surge, they must say so before they roll the dice. They also must indicate if they are using it to reduce the CL by one level or to reduce their Strain by one point. If another player wants their hero to assist the acting hero, they must also say it before the dice are rolled.
